A broad consensus has emerged among interested parties in adopting a single charging port for electronic products such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops . The Department has also decided to form a sub-group to investigate the feasibility of using uniform charging ports for wearables .

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, said that a broad consensus had emerged among interested parties in adopting a single charging port for electronic products such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary Department of Consumer Affairs, said during a meeting of the Central Inter-Ministerial Task Force, which was established to address the problem of uniformity in charging ports of electronic devices.According to the release, the Department has also decided to form a sub-group to investigate the feasibility of using uniform charging ports for wearables.The sub-group will include representatives from government departments and research centers.The MoEFCC also hoped that an impact study might be conducted to examine the impact of uniform charging ports in electronic devices on e-waste, according to the statement.
