KARUR: In an attempt to combat the escalating trend of girls dropping out of school and becoming victim to child marriage, Karur district administration has made it mandatory for girls to obtain a no objection certificate (NOC) from the village administrative officer (VAO) to reserve a marriage hall.The NOC will declare the girls' age as eligible for marriage.Around 3,000 adolescent girl students out of 52,000 students in the district from Class IX to Class XII were not attending school, according to district collector Dr T Prabhushankar, who taught at a VAO conference recently.Child marriage prevents study from continuing.

The district administration was also asked by the owners of marriage halls to rent out their facilities only on the production of a NOC for the bride's age.According to the collector, marriage hall owners may also be prosecuted for child marriages.If we insist on the NOC, it would be a checkpoint in the system, and we would reduce the incidences to a certain degree, he said.When asked if such actions would prevent child marriages, which occur clandestinely in village temples, the collector said they would hold such a meeting with religious places priests to hold them accountable for the offence.

At the monthly meeting on the second Wednesday of every month, they should bring it to the attention of officials concerned via Child Line helpline 1098 and the collector.At the recent gram sabha gathering, Prabhushankar said that all the 157 villages in the district chose to be child-friendly and passed bills.In November 2021, the district administration launched a campaign called Nimirndhu Nil, Thunindhu Sol to dispel the notion of resistance and fear among school girls in protesting sexual abuse imposed on them.
