Teachers die in police custody; SIT charges 4 UP officers with aiding suicide

LUCKNOW: The special investigation team (SIT) of UP Police charged with the murder of a government teacher in police detention in Kannauj in March 2020 has booked four policemen, including the then police station chief, for abetment to suicide and unlawful detention.Anil Kumar, a teacher, was arrested by police after his in-laws made a complaint.His body was discovered hanging in a washroom at the police station compound.The police had received a clean chit from Kannauj district police and then CB CID a little before.

They were charged with suicide, unlawful detention, public servant breaking rules, and public servant framing an incorrect record.According to the preliminary investigation, Tribhuvan Prasad Verma had illegally arrested the teacher at the police station, and his medical check-up was not carried out then as per rules.On the fateful day, another suspect, head constable Radheysham, was handed a petition by the victims' kin, asking that the cops not do anything wrong to him.Constable Arun Kumar, another accused, was given the job of taking the victim to the washroom and should have been vigilant and watchful about his conduct.

The investigation will now be led by a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer, according to senior police officials.
