Teachers die while being held by the police; Special Investigation Team charges 4 officers

LUCKNOW: The Special Investigating Team (SIT) of UP Police, which is investigating the death of a government teacher in police custody in Kannauj in March 2020, has charged four policemen, including the then police station commander, for abetment to suicide and unlawful arrest.Anil Kumar, a teacher, was arrested by police after a brother brought a charge.His body was discovered hanging in a washroom inside the police station complex.The police had had a clear chit before an investigation by Kannauj police and then by CB CID.

They were found guilty of murder, unlawful detention, public servant breaking rules, and public servant framing a false identity.According to the preliminary inquiry, Tribhuvan Prasad Verma had illegally arrested the teacher at the police station, and his medical examination was not performed then as per regulations.On the fateful day, another accused, head constable Radheysham, was given an application by the victims' kin to avoid doing anything wrong.Constable Arun Kumar, a third accused, was given the task of transporting the victim to the washroom, and should have been on guard and watchful about his conduct.
