GUWAHATI: On his 72nd birthday, Assam commemorated its first chief minister and freedom fighter Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, who is also known as Lok Kayan Divas in the state. In recognition of their outstanding services, the state government gave the Lok Sewa Puraskar to 99 non-gazetted government employees.Among the 99 staff, ten were given the state-level award, while 89 were given the district-level award. Each recipient was given a plaque, Rs 25,000 cash, and a year to extend their service period.

Assam is indebted to Bordoloi, according to Sarma, who has praised him as the architect of modern Assam.Assam was rescued from being a part of East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, thanks to him.Bordolois's success, according to him, lies in the fact that he played a vital role in rejecting the Cabinet Mission Plan's proposals, he said as a political leader. No Assamese will forget how Bordoloi and others orchestrated the deceptive strategy of the Cabinet Mission Plan, which put an end to Assam's existence.

Bordoloi said he continued his fight to secure Assam's future even after the country's independence and partition.Bordoloi left an indelible mark on the minds of Assamites by including the administration of Naga Hills, Mizo Hills districts, Khasia-Jayantia Hills, Garo Hills, and Mikir Hills in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, and granting the Plains Tribe status to the tribal living in the plains, he said.
