The first phase of panchayat elections saw a turnout of over 68 percent.

Jharkhand saw an overall turnout of 68.15% in the first phase of voting for the three-tier-panchayat election . The first phase turnout was 75.49 percent in 2015 .

Ranchi (input: On Saturday, Jharkhand saw an overall turnout of 68.15% in the first phase of voting for the long-awaited three-tier-panchayat election.The first phase turnout was 75.49 percent in 2015.However, officials maintained that the ongoing polls began on a positive note throughout the state, with no significant negative events occurring in any district, as well as extremist poll boycott calls in some areas.People queued up at polling booths in good numbers long before the election started at 7 a.m. R S Prasad, the secretary of the state election commission (SEC), said, Total turnout has been 68.15%.

Five other districts also saw 70%+ voting, the remaining five were in the 60-70 bracket.In the 2015 election, all 24 districts went to the polls in one go, covering 72 blocks in 21 districts.The polling is divided in four sections this time.The remaining phases will be held on May 19, 24 and 27.

The polls were held for the first time in December, when many people returned to their villages during the harvesting season.
