NEW DELHI: Justice LN Rao, a retired SC Judge, was appointed as the pointman by the Supreme Court on Thursday to monitor prompt implementation of changes to the Indian Olympic Association's constitution, prepare electoral rolls, and hold elections.Given the threat from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to stifle IOA as the national Olympic body, a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli referred to the latest e-mail on behalf of the IOC and dismissed arguments from a medley of supporters for the appointment of Secretary General Rajeev Mehta. The progress of preparations for the National Games in Gujarat from September 27 to October 12 weighed on the court in keeping Mehta as IOA secretary general. The bench considered the factional conflict within IOA and the fact that Anil Khanna has resigned as acting president to narrow the list of IOA delegates who will fly to Lausanne, Switzerland, to meet with IOC representatives on the subject of resolving the conflict.

Abhinav Bindra, two government officials, SAI DG Sandip Pradhan, MYAS joint secretary Kunal, and OCA DG Husain Al-Musallam are among the participants. After the Diwali break, the court scheduled the matter for further examination.
