Washington, D.C. (US), December 9, 2017: According to the Wall Street Journal newspaper, the US is scheduled to introduce new sanctions against Russia and China on Friday, limiting human rights abuses in both countries. The sanctions will also include provisions regarding Russian security sector activities that are allegedly related to the transfer of Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles to the US, and illicit fishing activities in the Pacific Ocean, which Washington blames on Beijing. The United Kingdom and Canada also passed similar legislation.During a discussion Wednesday with Center for a New American Security, Kimberly Jackson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Preparedness, said the Pentagon is prepared for things beyond China and Russia. We are not overlooking the absolute need to be ready in the short run, because we are assessing readiness from a tactical perspective.

Jackson said that our systems must have the flexibility that allows us to plan and invest into the future, and that we must think critically about how we divest, how we modernize, and how we ensure that readiness for years to come.
