According to a media story, a well-known British newspaper and news site has apologised to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for an inaccuracies in an article it published in 2019 accusing the premier of pocketing British foreign aid funds.The Mail on Sunday and news website Mail Online apologised to Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday, according to Daily News.The article, published on July 14, claimed that Shehbaz Sharif embezzled funds provided by the UKs Department for International Development (DFID) for the reconstruction of the 2005 earthquake while he was Punjab's chief minister.It had quoted former accountability chief Shahzad Akbar and a few other persons, none of whom was in a legal position The PML-N quickly denied the story, saying it was published on the advice of (PTI Chairman) Imran Khan.
In March this year, the newspaper published a 50-page response to Shehbaz Sharif's defamation suit.According to Dawn, the National Accountability Bureau had never accused the PML-N president of corruption in relation to British public funds or DFID grant aid, and we are proud to make this clear and apologise to Sharif for this blunder.
