Rudrapur (Ukraine): The Uttar Pradesh irrigation department sent out eviction notices to residents of eight villages in Khatima, a US Nagar district on Saturday, advising them to vacate land belonging to the UP government. This came just days after Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and his UP counterpart Yogi Adityanath officially agreed to asset divisions between the two states, which had been ongoing since the states' formation in 2000.On May 8, some of these villagers performed jal samadhi in a canal as remembrance for the Dhamis' loss from Khatima, a constituency the CM had held for the past two terms. The villagers called Dhami to help them resolve their land issue, and the CM met them the next day, guaranteeing that their houses and structures on commercial lands will not be demolished.

When Jhankaiya Police of Khatima came to an end, they intervened. The action was being taken now, according to officials from the UP irrigation department, as the assets and liabilities division between the two state governments was pending. The Sharda reservoir property belongs to the UP government, and the residents there were given notices to exit the property on April 14 this year.Despite this, they are still encroaching on government property.

One of the villagers, Ramayan Ram, said, We had performed a symbolic jal samadhi earlier, and we would go to whatever extent if they threaten to forcefully evict us.We were given CM Dhami's help recently, who met with UP CM Yogi Adityanath and reached an agreement on the division of income and liabilities, a subject the two states have discussed and discussed since Uttarakhand was partitioned out of Uttar Pradesh 21 years ago.
