NEW DELHI: Margaret Alva, the opposition's vice presidential nominee, congratulated Jagdeep Dhankhar of the NDA for winning the election on Saturday, saying that even though the poll is over, the fight for independence, democracy, and restoring parliaments' dignity will continue.She slammed some opposition parties for supporting the BJP in this election, either directly or indirectly, claiming that it was a plot to derail the idea of a united opposition.Alva said that such groups and leaders have undermined their own credibility by supporting the BJP in this election.Mr Dhankhar has been congratulated on his appointment as Vice President!

She thanked all the volunteers for their sacrifice during our short but intense campaign, she said shortly after Dhankhar was elected as India's 14th Vice President.Dhankhar, a former governor of West Bengal, received 528 votes, while Alva, an 80-year-old woman, received 182.The opposition had a chance to unite, to forget the past and establish friendships among themselves during this election.In an attempt to derail the notion of a united opposition, some opposition parties directly or indirectly supported the BJP.
